History

The Taj Mahal was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 as a mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal; Agra Fort was the political center of the Mughal Empire during the same era.

Conservation

Conservation focuses on marble preservation and pollution controls around the Yamuna; visitors help by staying on paths, avoiding flash photography in restricted zones, and carrying out rubbish.

Adventure tips

Book early for train seatsGatimaan Express seats sell out in peak season; reserve early or be prepared for a car transfer at the same price.

Taj is closed FridaysPlan your day around a Friday closure — the itinerary runs every other day but not on Friday when the mosque inside is in use.

Carry government IDYou’ll need ID for monument entry and train checks — keep a digital and physical copy handy.

Timing for photosEarly morning and late afternoon give the best light and smaller crowds; mid‑day is busiest and harshest for photography.

Recommended gear

Comfortable walking shoes: Paved and marble surfaces require stable, comfortable footwear for several hours of walking.
Refillable water bottle: Keep hydration handy; vendors are available but refilling conserves plastic.
Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen): Open courtyards and platform areas offer little shade during midday.
Light scarf or shawl: Useful for modest dress inside some sites and for wind along the Yamuna in cooler months.
