Before dawn the boat slips away from Punta Sam, the lights of Cancún shrinking behind you while the Caribbean opens like a moving horizon. The water smells clean and the current seems to push you toward a gathering—plankton-rich waters where whale sharks feed. When the guide spots the distinctive grey back, the sea changes pitch; the shark glides by, indifferent and enormous, and the world narrows to breath, fins, and the slow, patient presence beside you.
