The boat slips from Fingal Head and the ocean opens: cool spray, a low horizon and Cook Island rising like a coral knuckle 600 metres offshore. Within a 20-minute run you’re anchored inside the Cook Island Aquatic Reserve (Joongurra–Narrian), a compact pocket of reef where green turtles forage amid bommies and kelp.
