We offer surf lessons for all from our surf school base at Cullen Beach on the Moray Firth. Whether it’s your first time or you’re working on improving your skills, we can help you learn in a safe and fun environment.
Perfect for adults & kids, learning to surf is fun for everyone!
We provide all the equipment you'll need, including high-quality 5mm thick winter wetsuits that keep you toasty, and gloves, boots, and hoods if needed.
You'll check in and meet your instructor. Then we'll get changed and head down to beach for an introduction, theory and important safety info. After getting loose with a warm up we'll get in the water, where your instructor will give you personalised advice based on your ability and goals. Time for fun in the sea! We'll have about 1.5 hours water time, and the lesson will last about 2 hours total after we're changed and on the beach.
If you're a beginner, we'll cover beach & ocean safety, and introduction to surf equipment, wave selection and catching broken waves independently, and pop-up technique (standing up). Depending on your level and the conditions of the day, we will move on to cover speed control, turning left and right, paddling out and the turtle roll, catching unbroken green waves, angled takeoffs, bottom turns, and cutbacks.
Please bring a towel, sunscreen, and water. We recommend you arrive with swimwear on (for under your wetsuit) as it makes it easier to get changed at the beach.
All participants must be able to swim unaided to ensure safety in North Sea conditions.
Wearing swimwear beneath your wetsuit saves time and makes changing on the beach easier.
Keep hydrated and warm after lessons by packing a towel and a water bottle.
Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult in the water for their safety.
Cullen has a fishing heritage dating back centuries, historically known for its oyster beds and medieval harbor.
Blue Coast Surf & Paddle supports local marine conservation efforts to protect the fragile coastline and marine ecosystems of the Moray Firth.
Provided by the school to protect against cold North Sea temperatures.
