You set off before the sky softens, wheels humming away from Ubud and the road slipping into black toward Kintamani. By torchlight the trail is a ribbon of shadow and stone—loose ash, hardened lava steps and the occasional volcanic boulder—leading up through scrub and sparse acacia toward a rim that will soon drink the sun.
