You leave Sharm el Sheikh under a sheet of stars, the air cool and the road cutting through black desert. By torchlight a scramble of footsteps and the occasional jingle of a camel saddle mark the ascent; the summit’s chapel waits like a small, stone throat for the first light. When the sun edges above the horizon, the ridge sharpens and the chapel’s tiny silhouette glows — a hard-won view after hours on switchbacks and ancient steps.
challenging.
10–12 hours.
Requires high cardiovascular fitness and comfort with sustained uphill hiking at night; good balance for uneven surfaces.
The climb is strenuous: expect 2–3 hours uphill on a dewy, rocky path with sections of 700 stone steps; a high fitness level is recommended.
Camels can cover part of the route up to the 700-step section for an additional fee, but they do not go to the actual summit; be prepared to walk the final stretch.
Conservative dress is required—shoulders and knees covered for both men and women; remove hats inside religious buildings and be respectful of worshippers.
This tour is not recommended for travelers with serious cardiovascular or spinal conditions due to the steep, sustained climb and uneven terrain.
St. Catherine’s Monastery was founded in the 6th century near a site traditionally associated with Moses and contains one of the oldest continuously operating monastic communities.
The Sinai desert is ecologically fragile—stay on paths, avoid collecting stones or plants, and minimize light and noise at night to protect wildlife and cultural sites.
