Before dawn the eastern sky over Oahu hardens from ink to indigo, and the trailhead smells of salt and wet guava. Your private guide drives you out of the city while the island sleeps, depositing you at the Makapu'u Lighthouse lookout. The ridge wind teases the grasses as you step onto the path; the ocean below pulls the horizon into a thin, bright line. A 40-minute hike along exposed coastal trail leads down toward the Makapu'u tide pools—rock-walled natural basins where early light pools and the Pacific seems to breathe.
