History

Pokhara grew as a trade and stopping point along Himalayan routes; it later became the gateway for treks into the Annapurna conservation area.

Conservation

Adventure tips

Confirm pickup and timingBecause there’s only one balloon service, contact the operator the day before to confirm your pickup window from Lakeside.

Dress in warm layersTemperatures at sunrise are several degrees colder than the lakeshore—bring an insulated jacket and hat.

Secure your cameraUse a wrist or neck strap; the basket can jostle during boarding and landing and you’ll want stable photos of the ridge.

Plan for cancellationsFlights are weather-dependent—build flexibility into your schedule and have a backup morning free.

Recommended gear

Insulated jacket: Keeps you warm during cold pre-dawn temperatures and while waiting at the launch site.
Camera or smartphone with strap: Captures panoramic views—strap prevents drops during boarding and in-wind conditions.
Closed-toe shoes: Provides stable footing around the launch and landing zone, which can be uneven or muddy.
Sunglasses and hat: Reduces glare at sunrise and keeps eyes comfortable when the sun rises over the peaks.
