A low hush settles over the valleys as minibuses pull up an hour before sunrise and passengers step into the cool Anatolian air. The balloon envelopes—giant, bright as fruit—inflate and the basket rocks with polite anticipation. Once aloft, the landscape unrolls: honeycombed tuff, mushroom-shaped “fairy chimneys,” and orchards threaded by winding ravines. The basket drifts, the pilot’s commentary pointing out rock-cut churches and a patchwork of vineyards while a pale sun edges over the horizon.
