The trail opens before the city fully wakes: salt air presses against the trailhead and headlamps fade as the sky lightens. Climbers move in steady rhythm up the paved switchbacks, the crater’s rim clawing skyward until Waikiki’s high-rises and the Pacific roll into view beneath a pale gold horizon.
easy.
1–2 hours.
Suitable for beginners and most ages; expect sustained uphill walking on paved surfaces and stairs—basic aerobic fitness recommended
The official trail is about 1.6 miles round-trip with roughly 560 ft (170 m) of elevation gain; the grade is steady but manageable on a paved path with stairs and one short tunnel.
Park admission is required; many tour operators provide advance tickets and hotel pickup which skip the ticket line—check your provider’s instructions.
The trail includes steep sections, stairs and a narrow tunnel, so it is not wheelchair accessible and is challenging with a stroller beyond the lower paved portions.
You can bring snacks but there are no services at the summit; refreshments and restrooms are available near the park entrance and in Waikiki before the hike.
Known in Hawaiian as Lēʻahi, Diamond Head’s tuff cone was formed during Honolulu Volcanic Series eruptions and later housed coastal defense installations in the early 20th century.
Stay on the designated trail to limit erosion of fragile volcanic soils; the park manages visitor flow to protect native vegetation and archaeological features.
