Before dawn the road from Medan unwinds through palm and vegetable plots toward Berastagi, and the silhouette of Mount Sibayak rises like a dark promise on the horizon. The trail begins in pine and secondary forest before opening onto volcanic scree; by headlamp you pick your way past steam vents whose sulfurous breath colors rocks and fog.
