Before dawn a coach eases out of Warsaw and the highway slides away beneath a blanket of stars. By first light the basket yawns open and the pilot counts the burners; the countryside of Podlaskie below unfolds in slow, gilded strokes. The balloon rises, the Narew River unwinds like a silver ribbon, and the wetlands below push up reeds and islands that seem to rearrange themselves with every gust.
