You stand on the ridge above Selo as the last light slides down into the Javanese lowlands; the trail behind you fades into a wash of headlamp halos and insect sound. Suitable for hikers with good cardio fitness who can sustain steep climbs for 3–5 hours with a daypack and sleep in camp.
Expect roughly 3–4 hours to reach the upper savanna and 1–2 hours from there to the summit depending on pace and route—total hiking distance typically 6–8 km one way.
Merbabu's summit exceeds 2,900–3,100 m; some hikers feel mild symptoms. Pace yourself, hydrate, and inform the guide of any issues early.
