A flat-gray morning opens over Summersville Lake and the paddleboard is already humming with potential. The guide clips a leash to the board, and the water, patient and wide, seems to dare you forward—broad coves, sheer sandstone walls, and the sudden shadow of the New River Gorge Bridge passing like a hand above. Grouped with other paddlers, you push off from a small ramp and trade the manicured shore for the lake’s rocking edge.
