You start mid-morning on the steep, cobbled climb through Vézelay’s stone houses, the air carrying the faint scent of limewashed walls and cut grass. The Visitor’s House sits halfway up the hill — small models on a long table, a guide waiting to orient you before the basilica itself. Walk the final ten minutes and the Romanesque mass of stone opens; sunlight, engineered by builders nine centuries ago, pours into the nave and seems to move across sculpted capitals.
