You step up from Beijing Metro Line 4 at Beigongmen Exit C and the air changes — a long, calm expanse of water and pavilions unfurls, and your guide, holding a sign that reads "Roy Li," points down the path toward the north gate. The path skirts Kunming Lake where carp break the surface and willows lean as if listening. The scale of roofs and the slope of Longevity Hill flatten the city's noise into distant hums.
