Tour description

City walk - Uppsala University history 1h This tour has a focus on the University of Uppsala Anno Domini 1477 (the oldest in the Nordic countries). The city walk visits the University Hall and passes Gustavianum and Carolina Rediviva. The guide is provided by an authorized Uppsala guide. We walk around central Uppsala with a focus on the buildings, professors and student housing that are preserved. Hear about Celsius, Rudbeck and Linnaeus as well as the student who entered into a contract with the devil himself. You get to hear everything from the brutal 17th century student inaugurations, the professor who was rumored to sell essays to the students and how the feud between Denmark and Sweden gave Uppsala its university. You will also hear how it came about that the university had to buy back a gift from the king by one of the university's builders. Hear about Uppsala University as a city within the city, and the bad community between students and the city's citizens. Hear about how students were caught by the police were forced to be handed over to the cathedral judge and much more.
