We strongly advise having a foundation lesson before heading out onto exposed waters on a SUP.

A private lesson is the best way to kick-start your SUP skills, and is the best option if you are serious about progressing quickly and confidently. With all the instructors attention focussed on just you this is the easiest way to maximise your progress and enjoyment.

Our expert SUP instructor will teach you all the basics need to take advantage of this up and coming sport. Cayton Bay just so happens to be the perfect place to start your SUP adventure, with the Point and a wide bay to practise without danger of crowds and other sea craft.

The content of your lesson will include –

Self launch and rescue Knee Paddling Basic Paddle strokes Pop up and standing Board position Environmental awareness Risk and hazard assessment Topics/ Outcomes Environment & Safety ​Identify surface water movement and current direction Identify wind direction and strength Identify SUP hazards Choose a safe SUP exposed waters location Identify self rescue techniques and when to apply them Apply SUP etiquette at exposed waters locations

​Equipment & Clothing Choose suitable exposed waters board, leash and equipment

Paddle Skills Identify safe entry and exit points Identify techniques to negotiate shore-breaks up to 1½ ft Identify paddling technique and stance used in choppy waters Fall and retrieve techniques in uneven waters and wind Identify techniques to negotiate swell

Demonstrate turns in exposed waters: Back paddling (right & left side) Sweep stroke

Activity will take place if:

Shore-break up to 0.5 metres (1 ½ ft.) Swell size up to 0.6 metres (2 ft.) No breaking waves Wind speed less than 12 knots Offshore wind less than 10 knots

If we feel the conditions are too dangerous we will offer surfing as an alternative activity, to reschedule or a full refund
