You step off the pier into Charlotte Amalie and the air smells faintly of salt and rum; narrow streets climb away from the harbor, threaded with duty-free shops and pastel storefronts. A Godfrey Tours bus eases through the town, then climbs toward Mafolie Hotel where the coastline fans out: Water Island, Hassel Island and, on clearer days, the shoulder of St. Croix beyond the horizon.

Charlotte Amalie was a Danish colonial port; remnants of that era appear in architecture, stone cisterns and the layout of the old town, shaped by maritime trade routes.
Stick to marked paths and use reef-safe sunscreen at beach stops; local groups work to keep reefs healthy and shorelines clean for tourism and wildlife.
