A salt wind pushes across West Sands as the van eases out of Edinburgh and the city’s stone gives way to low hedgerows and the wide, cool light of Fife. By midmorning you’re walking on cobbles and grassy paths, the same tracks that have carried students, fishermen and pilgrims for centuries—sea spray daring you to step closer to the cliffs.
