Sound Waves at ProArts Playhouse: Violin and Vibraphone in Kihei

At the ProArts Playhouse on South Kihei Road in Kihei, Hawaii, the Salon Concert Series brings a close, polished chamber-music atmosphere to Maui’s sun-baked south shore. Sound Waves with Andrew Wu and Nolan Wren presents a one-hour program of violin and vibraphone that moves from Baroque clarity to modern colors, delivered in an intimate theater at 1280 S Kihei Rd, Kihei, HI 96753. Presented ProArts Playhouse, this concert pairs two versatile artists—violinist Andrew Wu and vibraphonist Nolan Wren—whose combined timbres reframe familiar repertoire into fresh, immediate sound. Walk in from Kihei’s shoreline, where the Pacific and offshore coral reef shape light and air, and you’ll feel the island’s musical life connected to landscape: Haleakalā’s dome watches the south shore, while lava flows and reef flat create a distinctive coastal ecology that frames any evening out. Inside the Playhouse, the focus narrows: clear acoustics, close seating, and a program that can include LeClair, Rameau, Bartók, Elgar, Fischer and Piazzolla—works that reward both classical listeners and newcomers. What makes this event special for visitors is its scale and context. Maui’s concert halls are few; ProArts Playhouse brings high-level chamber music into a community setting where a single phrase by the violin can hang in the air like a line of surf. Andrew Wu’s background—rooted in Detroit’s opera and symphony scenes—adds a cross-genre sensibility that blends smoothly with Wren’s mallet art. The one-hour runtime with no intermission makes this an excellent stop between beach hours and dinner. Practical notes: arrive early to secure good seats and street or lot parking near the venue. The theater is compact—conversation is a distraction—so expect a focused listening experience. This is also an opportunity to pair culture with place: catch sunset photos along Keawakapu or a quick shoreline walk before the program. For visitors looking to balance outdoor time with cultural depth, Sound Waves offers a concentrated, high-quality musical moment that’s unmistakably Maui: warm air on the walk in, ocean light outside, and chamber-scale sound inside. Whether you’re a curious traveler, a classical devotee, or someone who loves live music after an afternoon on the water, this ProArts Playhouse performance is a local highlight that makes an evening on the south shore feel thoughtfully complete. Families will appreciate the one-hour length and contained venue footprint; accessibility details vary, so check ProArts Playhouse’s Access for All initiative before arrival. Wear layers—the theater can feel cool after an evening walk—and bring reef-safe sunscreen for pre-show beach time. Pair the concert with dinner along South Kihei Road where local plates range from poke to plantation flavors, or let the performance be the cultural anchor for a multi-day Maui visit that can include shoreline hikes and even a Haleakalā sunset trip.
