History

Dubai’s market culture grew around Dubai Creek, which historically linked the emirate to regional trade routes and made Deira the city’s commercial heart.

Conservation

Rapid development has pressured the creek and historic districts; support small local vendors, minimize single-use plastic, and follow guide instructions to reduce wear on narrow market lanes.

Adventure tips

Go early or latePlan the tour for early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak heat and the heaviest crowds in the souks.

Carry small cashBring small-denomination dirhams for quick purchases and bargaining—many vendors prefer cash over cards for low-value items.

Bargain respectfullyStart low (30–50% below asking) and keep negotiations friendly; vendors expect bargaining, especially in Karama and the Spice Souk.

Watch valuables and receiptsIf you buy high-value items like gold, get official receipts and check customs limits for exporting jewelry to avoid problems at departure.

Recommended gear

Comfortable walking shoes: Closed-toe, supportive shoes for cobbled lanes and crowded market alleys.
Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated in Dubai’s heat; bottled water is usually provided but having your own helps between stops.
Light scarf or shawl: Useful for modesty in conservative neighborhoods and protection from sun or AC in malls.
Small crossbody bag with RFID protection: Keeps cash, passport copy and phone secure while navigating busy markets.
