Sunlight skips across weathered cobblestones as you tap open the Questo app and step into Funchal’s old town. The Atlantic wind pushes scent of salt and citrus through narrow alleys; painted doors on Rua de Santa Maria lean like witnesses, and the stone ramp toward São Tiago Fortress feels like a deliberate clue. For ninety minutes the city converts into a crime scene: clues pull you from market stalls to quiet squares, each stop folding a piece of story into place.

Funchal rose as a strategic Atlantic port; sugar production and later wine trade shaped its urban expansion, while São Tiago Fortress dates to coastal defenses of earlier centuries.
Stick to streets and gardens, avoid touching or defacing painted doors, and support local vendors to keep small businesses and heritage sites sustainable.
