You leave Guadalajara before dawn and the city lights slide away, replaced by highland pines and a sharpening chill. By midmorning the trail opens to hard-packed volcanic scree and a white rim where snow still lingers; the goal—Nevado de Colima—rises above the tree line, its broad shoulder framing the active cone of Volcán de Colima across the valley.
moderate.
15 hours (approx, door-to-door).
Requires moderate cardiovascular fitness and stamina for a sustained uphill at high elevation; comfortable on uneven terrain.
The hiking route is about 5.5 kilometers to the summit ridge; the full experience includes transport and stops, totaling roughly 15 hours door-to-door.
No technical climbing skills are required, but participants should have moderate fitness and be comfortable on uneven, steep trails at altitude.
Guides provide bottled water and a brunch; a beer or nonalcoholic beverage is offered at the end to participants who meet the legal drinking age.
Nevado de Colima is an older, non-erupting dome adjacent to the active Volcán de Colima; guides monitor conditions and trips are run with safety protocols in place.
Nevado de Colima sits on the Jalisco–Colima border and forms a volcanic pair with the younger, active Volcán de Colima; the area has long been used by local communities for seasonal grazing and firewood.
The high-elevation ecosystems are fragile—stick to established trails, pack out all trash, and follow guide instructions to limit erosion and protect native flora.
