A sudden hush settles over Þingvellir as you slip into the drysuit and step toward water so clear it feels unreal. The Silfra fissure cuts a ribbon of blue through volcanic rock; the current moves you like a low-key tug, guiding you between the North American and Eurasian plates. Visibility can reach 150 meters—walls of ancient lava rise on either side, fissures and shelves revealing the slow mechanics of the Earth that push continents apart about 2 cm a year.
moderate.
3 hours.
Moderate fitness — able to swim, comfortable in cold water, and able to stand/walk on uneven terrain for suit fittings.
Silfra’s water is near-freezing (around 2–4°C). You wear a thermal undersuit and a drysuit provided by guides; if you follow instructions and can swim, the equipment keeps you insulated.
No formal certification is required, but participants must be able to swim and should be comfortable with basic snorkeling; PADI-certified guides lead and supervise the group.
The 3-hour experience includes a safety briefing, thermal undersuit and drysuit, snorkel gear, PADI-certified guide, free underwater photos, and hot chocolate with cookies afterward.
This tour meets on location at Thingvellir National Park; you can drive (about 45–60 minutes) or book a transfer option from Reykjavík if you prefer not to drive.
Þingvellir is the historic site of the Althing, Iceland’s national assembly established around 930 AD, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and geological significance.
Silfra access is tightly regulated—no touching rock, stay within guide limits, and use biodegradable products; respecting rules preserves visibility and fragile aquatic systems.
