You step off the Cozumel Fiscal Pier as the boat hums awake, warm salt spray on your face and sky opening to a bright, shallow blue. The captain nudges away from the pier and the island’s reef line comes into view — jagged coral ridges breaking the surface like low waves. Within minutes you’re anchored over Palancar, the first reef: coral walls and gardens that slope down into clear water, parrotfish and rays appearing like punctuation between coral heads.
