You step off the gravel and the air tastes like cold metal and peat. Across a short stretch of volcanic plain the ground drops into a corridor of water so clear it looks like a mirror cut into stone. This is Silfra — a glacial fissure slicing the border between the North American and Eurasian plates — and within minutes a PADI divemaster has you snug in a drysuit, hood and gloves, explaining how the next hour will feel equal parts calm and deliberate.

No scuba skills required; snorkeling is surface-only but you must be comfortable floating and able to swim.
Silfra stays around 2–4°C year-round; drysuits, thermal undersuits, hoods and gloves are provided to keep you insulated.

This is a self-drive tour; there are no public buses to the meeting point, so you must drive your own vehicle.
