Dawn breaks over Moshi and the road to Marangu hums with coffee trucks and cyclists; Kilimanjaro’s bulk rises through mist as you drive toward the Marangu Gate. The trail begins in dense, dripping rainforest—moss-laced trunks, darting blue monkeys, and the occasional black-and-white colobus peering from high branches. The route climbs steadily, the canopy giving way to open ridgelines and wide-eyed views toward Mawenzi and the long shoulder of Kibo.

The trip is about 6 hours total (round-trip) with roughly 915 meters (3,000 ft) of ascent from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut.
This day hike reaches 2,743 m; most people manage it without prior acclimatization, but if you’ve recently come from near sea level move slowly and monitor for headache or nausea.
Most operators include hotel pick-up within about 15 km of Moshi and transport to/from Marangu Gate as part of the tour.
Expect blue monkeys and occasionally colobus monkeys, plus a variety of forest birds and small mammals like mongoose.
