You step through a modern gate and the city of Pompeii opens like a paused film: cobbled streets frozen under ash, frescoed rooms waiting for the light. The guide threads a path through narrow alleys and leads you past the Forum where merchants once argued, pointing out where everyday Roman life unfolded before Vesuvius decided otherwise.
