Embark on a creative adventure aboard The Spirit of the James, where you'll sketch the scenic beauty of the James River with guidance from local artist Paul "Buddy" Terrell. This unique art journaling experience invites all skill levels to explore mark-making while connecting with nature and history in a picturesque setting.
Join the staff of JRA and Artspace for a new experience on our educational pontoon boat, The Spirit of the James, and spend a couple hours sketching the James just down river of Richmond in Hopewell. Art Journaling is a journey of its own. We are going to explore a section of the James River discovering the possibilities of mark making in time, place and so much more. There will be instruction as we travel to our destination and the opportunity to explore the scenic James. No matter what your drawing skills, we are going to experience something new, something old, and a connection to a special place. JRA is excited to welcome Paul "Buddy" Terrell aboard the cruise, a local Richmond artist and Artspace Exhibition Committee Chair, as our special guest instructor.
Please bring the following materials: Art journal (Sketchbook): Size selection is personal. I prefer 11”x 9” but use what you are comfortable working with outdoors (loose paper is not a good option). Mark-making tools: pens, pencils, sharpies, Pigma pens, color pencils, travel watercolors (Cotman), etc... Bring what you are comfortable with. Photographers feel free to include your camera.
Use a portable sketchbook that’s easy to carry and sturdy enough for outdoor use during the cruise.
Wear layered clothing to adjust to river breezes and changing temperatures on the water.
Use waterproof or quick-drying inks and keep supplies in a waterproof bag during the cruise.
Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before departure to settle in and prepare your materials comfortably.
Hopewell’s location on the James River played a key role in early American colonial industry and trade, reflected in the historic sites visible from the cruise.
