Dawn breaks through a eucalyptus canopy as you set off from Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, the ravine immediately closing in around you. The route through Skeleton Gorge presses you into a shaded corridor of indigenous forest where ferns drip and rock faces channel cool, bright water; wooden ladders punctuate the ascent like handholds offered by the mountain itself. Above tree-line the fynbos opens and the trail pushes steady and uncompromising toward Maclear’s Beacon, Table Mountain’s high point, where the city and sea spill away beneath a raw horizon.
