Wind from the ice pushes across the moraine as you set out from the Skaftafell parking area, crampons ticking on packed snow. The trail climbs over glacial outwash and old moraine until the white wall of an outlet glacier comes into view; the cave’s blue depths seem almost municipal against the bright Arctic sky.
