A late-afternoon drive up to the Serra de Sintra thins Lisbon’s bustle into a cool, pine-scented hush. Streetlights pick out the crenellations of the Moorish Castle and the candy-colored roofs of Pena Palace; behind them the mountain’s dark folds hold the town like a patient audience. As headlights cut along narrow lanes, illuminated façades and shadowed terraces take on new textures — stonework that read plainly by day becomes theatrical by night.
