The day starts before dawn in Phuket: a minibus pulls away through quiet coastal roads, and the sea waits like a restless companion. An hour-plus run by speedboat cuts the horizon into ribbons of blue; islands appear as bare granite crowns rising from the Andaman, their beaches bright against the deep water.
easy.
12 hours.
Basic mobility and comfort with short walks, beach terrain and surface snorkeling; not strenuous but expect boat motion.
The Similan Islands are officially open to visitors roughly from October to May; tour availability is seasonal and weather-dependent.
Travel time varies with departure pier and sea state but typically ranges 60–120 minutes each way by speedboat.
Most operators include mask, snorkel and life vest, but bringing your own mask provides a better fit and comfort.
Pregnant women are usually not permitted on speedboat tours and operators may refuse participation for safety reasons.
The Similan Islands were declared a marine national park in the early 1980s to protect their reefs and seabed; their name comes from the Malay word for nine, reflecting traditional island numbering.
The park enforces visitor limits and no-take zones; visitors should use reef-safe sunscreen, avoid touching coral, and follow guides’ instructions to minimize impact.
