The morning air off the dry-zone plains feels as if the earth itself has an appointment — Sigiriya, a colossal lump of magma-turned-monolith, throws a long shadow over paddy fields while the driver eases the jeep through lanes of tamarind and coconut. You climb stone steps bolted to vertical walls, the heat pressing at your neck, and with each switchback the frescoes stare back: flattened colors of ancient painters who tried to hold the sky. Later the jeep rumbles into Minneriya as the afternoon light turns ponds to mirrors; a herd of elephants converges like a slow, deliberate tide and the world narrows to trunks, ears and wet dust.
