You step out of the air-conditioned van and the low plain around Sigiriya opens like a map—paddy fields, tamarind trees and a solitary slab of rock rising sharply from the earth. The metal staircase that snakes up its flank glints in the sun; behind a line of tourists you can already hear the rock breathing history. This is Lions Rock, where the palace ruins and frescoes of a fifth-century king still hold court above the jungle.
