Before dawn the air is thin and cool as a curtain; headlamps pick out stone steps that climb through cloud forest toward the Sun Gate. The train drops you at Km 104 and within an hour the forest closes in: orchids cling to mossy trunks, rivers dare you to listen to their rush, and carved terraces slip into the mountain like stairways to the sky.
