Morning light hits the high ridges as a minibus peels away from Sofia and climbs toward the Rila massif. By the time the forest thins you’re at Pionerska hut (1,520 m), and the chairlift will take you above the tree line to the Rila Lakes hut at roughly 2,150 m.
