A low cloud lifts over the crater rim and the two lagoons of Sete Cidades appear—one a deep green, the other a cool blue—split by a narrow bridge that seems to dare you to choose a side. The road winds along volcanic saddles, past cryptomeria stands and pineapple greenhouses, until the island opens again at the raw amphitheater of Lagoa do Fogo, where thermal steam still shapes the slopes.
