A cool morning lifts off Zurich as the shuttle threads through folding farmland and dark fir forest toward the Simmental valley. You step out in Erlenbach, breathe alpine air sharpened by snowmelt, and ride a glass-front gondola that lifts you above patchwork slopes; the ridge ahead dares you with twin blue lakes and a summit that trims the horizon.
moderate.
6–8 hours (including transfers).
Suitable for hikers with regular aerobic activity; expect sustained uphill sections and several hours on your feet.
The route is rated moderate; trails are well-marked so a guide isn’t required, but optional guiding services are available if you prefer company or local expertise.
This excursion runs mainly June through September when snow-free trails and gondola operations are most reliable.
Gondola tickets and private pickup/drop-off from Zurich are included; note extra transfer time is added beyond the 8 hours on-trail.
Yes—infants and small children can use strollers for parts of the route and infant seats are available in the vehicle, but hiking sections require carrying young children or using prepared paths.
Stockhorn’s slopes have long been seasonal pastureland; the arrival of mid-20th century cable cars opened the ridge to recreational hikers, linking villages to summit viewpoints.
Stay on marked trails to limit erosion, keep distance from grazing livestock, and pack out all waste—alpine soils and meadows recover slowly from disturbance.
