Urk was historically an island with a long fishing tradition; when surrounding land was reclaimed in the 20th century it became part of Flevoland, preserving a distinct maritime culture.
Respect local streets and private property when playing; Urk's coastal zones are managed for flood safety, so stick to public paths and avoid disturbing shorebirds.
