OBJECTIVE: The lure of diving deeper is exciting and mysterious to explore deeper dive sites while scuba diving. Sometimes it's a wreck that attracts you below 18 meters/60 feet, and on wall dives, it may be a Giant seafan or Pygmy seahorse. Training prepares you for deep diving, both the lure and the inherent risks, and to recognize your personal limits.

DURATION:

  • 2 hour Classroom
  • 2 hour Pool
  • 2 Certification Dives

TECHNIQUES/SKILLS:

  • Risk management of deeper dives
  • Gas planning/Calculating SAC rate
  • Team communication
  • Review of proper weighting
  • Practice controlled team descents down a line to hit target depths
  • Adjusting for buoyancy while monitoring information systems
  • Hovering in diver trim at target depths
  • Narcosis awareness & management
  • Underwater SMB deployment
  • Controlled ascent/Safety stop
  • Surface procedures
  • Debriefs/Logging dives

In the classroom we review the increased risks of diving to deeper depths and how to manage them. We will review the importance of gas management and dive planning, as well as execution. We will also review additional gear that we either must bring with us or should consider to deal with problems we might encounter at depth. This is also an opportunity to refresh ourselves about emergency procedures such as Out of Air situations, entanglements, and Lost Buddy.

Once we move to the pool, we will be accessing everyone’s weighting, trim, and buoyancy control. We will practice our descents as teams and down a line, and the ability to hit a target depth without hitting the floor. We will also learn how to ‘shoot a bag’ from underwater and discuss the options available and why you might choose one over another.

Then it’s time to put it all together at the ocean for your Certification dives! The day in Monterey will be 2 dives off a boat called The Beach Hopper, and that is when we will shoot for depths.
