The boat slips away from Negombo’s low-slung jetty just after first light, the lagoon receding as the Indian Ocean opens up. Salt air sharpens focus; the sea draws you toward shallow bommies of coral and the dark silhouettes of rusted hulls that rest on the sandy bottom. In the quiet of morning, your mask brings a new world into focus — bright parrotfish, striped angelfish and the occasional turtle cruising over seagrass beds.
