Experience the stunning coastal waters of Bar Harbor aboard the Schooner Margaret Todd. Enjoy scenic sails with expert crew and unique views of Maine’s iconic shoreline.
Bar Harbor, Maine, on the edge of Acadia National Park, offers some of the most spectacular coastal views in the United States. One of the best ways to experience this rugged shoreline and shimmering Atlantic waters is aboard the Schooner Margaret Todd, a traditional wooden sailing vessel well-known in the region for its authentic maritime charm and professionalism. Operating daily from Bar Harbor, Schooner Margaret Todd/Bar Harbor Ferry invites visitors to join private or group sailing excursions that range from peaceful two-hour morning sails to captivating sunset cruises that include live music. The schooner itself is a striking sight—built in 1990 to replicate the classic schooners of the 1800s—with tall white sails and varnished wood deck that offer an old-world elegance combined with modern safety and comfort.
The key highlights of this adventure are the scenic coastal views, including granite cliffs, pine-forested islands, and the chance to spot seals and abundant seabirds. The waters around Bar Harbor are part of the larger Gulf of Maine ecosystem, home to unique marine wildlife and shaped by glacial geology that created deep fjord-like inlets and coves. Sailing aboard the Margaret Todd provides an intimate connection to this environment, far from the crowds on land. The knowledgeable crew enhances the experience by guiding passengers through the sailing process, sharing local natural history and lore, and maintaining a warm, welcoming atmosphere onboard.
In addition to its natural beauty, Bar Harbor carries cultural weight as a historic summer retreat and gateway to Acadia National Park, established in 1916. The trip honors this tradition while promoting sustainable tourism. Sailing on the Margaret Todd lets visitors experience Maine’s maritime heritage and the striking coastal charm that defines this area’s outdoor recreation. Whether it’s a relaxing afternoon cruise or a vibrant evening with live music, this sailboat trip is a standout way to explore Bar Harbor’s seascape with safety, style, and local expertise.
