You step off an air-conditioned shuttle in Bayahibe and onto a low-slung speedboat; spray lifts from the bow, the Caribbean pushing the hull forward as palm-fringed coastline slides aft. The ride to Saona Island cuts through bands of turquoise and deep indigo, and the captain carves toward a shallow sandbar where waist-deep water collects like a warm, glassy bowl.

History

Saona Island lies within Parque Nacional del Este, an area with Taíno heritage and later colonial fishing history; the park preserves reefs and coastal forests shaped by limestone geology.

Conservation

Stick to marked areas, avoid stepping on coral or handling wildlife, and choose operators that support reef-safe practices and local community employment.

Adventure tips

Protect marine lifeUse reef-safe sunscreen and avoid touching coral or starfish to minimize impact on fragile ecosystems.

Bring motion-sickness medsThe speedboat crossing can be choppy—take medication beforehand if you get seasick.

Carry small cashVendors and tips on the island and for crew are usually cash only; bring small bills.

Waterproof essentialsStore phone, documents, and a spare dry shirt in a dry bag — boats and beaches get wet.

Recommended gear

Reef-safe sunscreen: Protects skin and reef ecosystems in the shallow Natural Pool and during beach time.
Dry bag: Keeps electronics and documents dry on a wet speedboat and catamaran.
Light beach footwear: Protects feet from hot sand and rocky shoreline when entering shallow reef areas.
Travel-sized first aid/sea-sickness kit: Helps manage minor cuts, sunburn, or motion sickness during the crossing.
