Late afternoon light slants across wind-scoured sand as you step away from Santa Maria’s Morabeza Hotel, the ocean at your right and a low ribbon of scrub to your left. The trail follows the west coast toward Monte Leão, a squat rock formation that keeps watch over the bay; as the sun dips, cliffs and dunes take on warm, sharp edges and the wind pushes salt and light into your face.

Total booking time is about five hours with roughly three hours of active hiking, including stops at Ponta Preta, Calheta and Murdeira.
