A dawn convoy leaves Underberg and the road turns from tar to a ribbed, white track that climbs the Drakensberg. The four-wheel drive shudders over rocky switchbacks, the wind sharpening the air until you feel the pass more than see it; above the clouds, the Sani Top Chalet appears like a human outpost on a high, wild shoulder of land.
