A narrow quay of fishing boats and salt-scraped stone falls away as the group departs Vernazza, the sea to one side and a historic mule track climbing into scrub and old dry-stone terraces above. The path gains about 330 meters in roughly an hour, stepping over roots, through olive groves and past the terraces that have shaped the Cinque Terre coastline for centuries.
