The trail opens with a high, wind-scoured plateau and a line of white peaks above — hikers gather at Xyloskalo on Omalos, boots ready, as the gorge mouth yawns beneath them. The path drops quickly into shadow; the riverbed dares you onward, cool air pushing up from the canyon as olive trees thin and towering cliffs close in. Footfalls on limestone, the occasional splash of spring water, then a long corridor of sheer rock that narrows to the famous “Iron Gates.”
