A soft light lifts off the plateau as the coach winds toward Omalos and the trailhead. You step onto limestone that has been carved by water and weather for millennia, and the gorge immediately takes charge — cliffs rising, shade narrowing, the riverbed daring you onward. The path drops steadily from the White Mountains toward the Libyan Sea, leading through tight rock walls, scree fields and stretches of packed trail where the gorge squeezes to 3 metres wide.

The walking section is roughly 16–18 km (10–11 miles) and takes about 5–7 hours on the trail; total tour time with transfers and ferry is 8–10 hours.
Children over 3 may join but the tour requires high fitness; the route is steep and rocky so it’s not recommended for those with heart problems or limited mobility.
There are stops with toilets and drinking water along the gorge, but food is not included—carry snacks and plan to buy a meal in Agia Roumeli if desired.
Most tours include a ferry from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakion and a coach back to Chania; reconfirm exact return logistics on booking.
The gorge has long been used by shepherds and villagers and was placed under national park protection in the 1960s to conserve its unique ecosystems.
